The Type 308 self-tapping insert (three-hole type) carries three cutting holes; as it is turned in, the cutting edges at those holes cut a mating thread in the host material, so it installs without pre-tapping. Suited to soft materials and castings, it markedly raises thread strength and wear resistance and is often used to repair damaged threaded holes.
