HPC/AI Servers: Tolerance and Reliability Design for Micro Screws and PCB Board Fastening

Published: 2026-10-12 Category: HPC / AI Servers Reading Time: approx. 5 min Source: YF Zhichengjia Technical Center

Executive Summary

Inside an 8-GPU AI server, the motherboard, accelerator card, switch board, power board and fan board are stacked layer upon layer, and board fastening is constrained simultaneously by high density, automation and high reliability. Based on the YF Zhichengjia HPC/AI-server industry handbook, this article explains the selection logic for tin-plated copper nuts, high-current terminals, super screws, micro-screw materials and tape-and-reel packaging.

Three Constraints on Board Fastening: High Density, Heat Transfer, Automation

Inside an 8-GPU AI training server, the motherboard, accelerator card (GPU module), switch board, power board and fan board are stacked layer upon layer. Board fastening faces three constraints at once: high density (screw-hole pitch compressed to a few millimeters, ordinary screw heads cannot fit), automation (whole-line SMT and automatic tightening, fasteners must be tape-packaged), and high reliability (equipment runs 24/7, one loosening means a whole board replacement). According to the YF Zhichengjia HPC/AI-server handbook, board-to-sheet-metal fastening has split into several mature technical routes.

PCB Threaded Joints: Tin-Plated Copper Nuts and SMT Components

The mainstream way to form a standard internal thread on a PCB is tin-plated copper nuts and small boards: they are soldered directly onto PCB pads during reflow, forming a repeatable threaded joint, and can also be used for stand-offs and support. Per the handbook, both such nuts and small boards can be supplied in tape-and-reel packaging, mounted directly by SMT equipment and seamlessly integrated with whole-line SMT processes.

Another category is high-current terminals: used at high-current positions such as power boards, they conduct current while forming a reliable threaded joint, with internal and external threads optionally pre-coated with adhesive for anti-loosening—conducting and fastening in one, eliminating the hassle of extra cable lugs.

Multi-Layer Boards and Sheet Metal: Super Screws

The handbook specifically mentions super screws, dedicated to joining multi-layer PCBs to each other and PCBs to sheet-metal racks. Such joints usually carry board self-weight and vibration while surviving repeated service disassembly, so machine threads (M series) are a prerequisite—they must mate with nuts or pre-formed threaded holes, offering high locking force, stable torque and no stripping under repeated disassembly. By contrast, self-tapping (B series) screws "bite" their own thread into a pilot hole and generally cannot be repeatedly disassembled without stripping; they are therefore used only at non-disassembled positions such as plastic housings.

Micro-Screw Tolerance and Material: How to Choose M0.6–M2

Once board fastening enters the M0.8–M2.0 range, the material table must be broken down by working condition. The YF Zhichengjia precision micro-screw handbook gives the following material logic, which engineers can check off against the working condition:

Material CategoryGradeMagnetic/Strength TraitsTypical Use
Carbon steelSWRCH10A / SWRCH18A / SWRCH22AHeat-treatable, low costGeneral structural fixing, self-tapping screws
Stainless (weakly magnetic)SUS302HQ / SUS304 / SUS316Not heat-treatable, corrosion-resistantSignal boards, positions needing magnetic shielding
Martensitic stainlessSUS410Heat-treatable for strengthLocking positions needing some hardness
Titanium alloyTA2Non-magnetic, lightweightMagnetic encoders, weight-saving boards

On dimensional tolerance, the handbook gives a complete spec table for M0.8×0.2P to M2.0×0.4P flat-head (C-head) series: head diameter steps from 1.30 mm to 3.0 mm, head-thickness tolerance held to ±0.05 mm, and socket depth and wall thickness all marked with minimum values. This approach of "locking tolerance by specification" is exactly the prerequisite for automatic tightening equipment not to jam or skip.

Tape Packaging and Automated Lines

AI-server OEM board assembly almost entirely runs on automatic tightening lines, so screws must meet two conditions: first, tape/tray packaging after full dimensional and appearance inspection to eliminate mixing; second, a stable preload window. The handbook's empirical value is to hold working preload at 70–80% of the screw's breaking torque—below this, clamping is insufficient; above it, batch head breakage. Drive recesses prefer TORX/TORX PLUS, which resist wear and offer good consistency compared with Phillips, suiting high-frequency electric-driver tightening.

Selection Recommendations

  • Threads needed on PCB: tin-plated copper nuts/small boards, tape SMT; do not press self-clinching nuts into thin PCBs.
  • High-current positions: high-current terminals, internal/external threads pre-coated for anti-loosening.
  • Repeated service disassembly: machine-thread screws with pre-formed threads/copper inserts; self-tapping only for non-disassembled plastic.
  • Near magnetic devices: weakly magnetic SUS304/316; non-magnetic TA2 titanium screws at sensitive positions.
  • Automated lines: tape packaging + TORX recess + set driver torque at 70–80% of breaking torque.

The essence of board fastening is not "find a screw and tighten it," but making fasteners error-free across SMT, automatic tightening and whole-machine vibration. Settling thread form, material magnetism and packaging method once at selection removes more than half of later line rework.

Conclusion

PCB and chassis fastening in AI servers is governed by the density trade-off: more compute per cubic meter means more fasteners per board, smaller screw sizes, and thinner sheets. Self-clinching nuts turn thin sheet metal into a threaded joint that survives repeated board insertion and removal, while SMT solder nuts let the placement machine populate threads directly during reflow—eliminating a separate manual tapping step. Multi-layer boards stacked with super screws and high-current terminals require controlled stand-off height and coplanarity, because uneven board compression causes socket contact stress or thermal interface gaps. Micro-screw tolerance at M0.6–M2 is chosen by the mating insert: 6g/6h fits must be matched as a pair, not bought separately, because a few micrometers of deviation already changes engagement. Material and surface finish are then decided by function—tin plating for solderable copper nuts, passivated stainless for chassis ground paths, and hardened steel for load-bearing stand-offs. Packaging format (tape and reel, cut strip, or loose bulk) is not a logistics detail; it directly determines feeder compatibility on the SMT line. Treating board-level fastening as part of the electrical and thermal design, rather than as an afterthought, is how high-density builds stay serviceable and reliable.

AI-server board fastening has formed a mature combination of "tin-plated copper nuts on board, super screws for stacking, self-clinching/rivet joints to sheet metal, and pre-applied adhesive for anti-loosening."
