The two-layer wedge-locking washer pair uses two washers with internal and external wedge teeth; when tightened, the inner wedge teeth engage each other while the outer serrations bite into the joint faces, forming a physical barrier on the tension principle. Even a slight tendency of the threaded pair to back off must first overcome the climbing resistance of the wedge teeth, so locking holds under strong vibration and high alternating loads.
