Embodied Intelligence: Micro-Fastener Selection Points in Reducers and Dexterous Hands

Published: 2026-10-12 Category: Embodied Intelligence Reading Time: approx. 6 min Source: YF Zhichengjia Technical Center

Executive Summary

A single humanoid robot carries thousands of fasteners, yet they are concentrated almost entirely in the most valuable real estate: joints, dexterous hands and sensor modules. Based on the YF Zhichengjia embodied-intelligence industry handbook, this article explains harmonic/RV reducer mounting, fingertip micro screws, light-alloy-frame thread reinforcement and the joint anti-loosening system in one pass, giving robot structural engineers a ready-to-compare selection reference.

Why Humanoid Robots Are a "Temple in a Snail Shell" for Fasteners

A single humanoid robot carries thousands of fasteners, almost all concentrated in the most space-pressed positions: joints, actuators and sensor modules. According to the YF Zhichengjia embodied-intelligence industry handbook, robot fasteners must simultaneously pass three gates: miniaturization (narrow internal mounting space in joints), lightweighting (every gram directly affects endurance and dynamic response), and high reliability (high-frequency reciprocating joint motion—one loose screw can stop the whole machine). This is completely different from the traditional industrial-equipment logic of "just get it assembled," and it is precisely the window of opportunity for micro-fastener suppliers.

The industry's well-known 15-85 rule also applies to robotics: fastener purchase cost is only about 15% of total-life cost, while hidden costs of design, supply chain, logistics, warehousing, inspection, pre-assembly and after-sales account for 85%. Early selection errors are extremely expensive to fix later, which is why OEMs increasingly prefer joint development with fastener makers at the solution stage.

Reducer Mounting: Shoulder Screws and Rod-End Joint Bearings

A harmonic reducer consists of a wave generator, a flexspline and a circular spline; the flexspline undergoes periodic elastic deformation, its thin-walled ring is hollow, and both axial and radial mounting space are squeezed to the limit. An RV reducer is built in two stages—planetary gears and cycloidal pins—compact but transmitting large torque. The screws used on the end covers, crossed-roller-bearing preload and input/output flanges of both types are often M2–M6 shoulder screws.

As defined in the handbook, a shoulder screw is a key foundational part in humanoid-robot joints and moving structures, carrying "connection, positioning and rotational support": the cylindrical shoulder provides radial location for the joint rotary support, the threaded section provides clamping, and the end face provides axial support. A rod-end joint bearing is the core articulated part of linear actuators (ball-screw push rods) and link structures, allowing controlled multi-directional swinging; it is a core structural part of biomimetic motion. Both are mainly used at knee and ankle joints, dexterous hands and actuator mounting positions.

Dexterous Hands and Sensor Modules: The Precision Bar for Micro Screws

The dexterous hand is the tightest position on the whole robot: a single finger integrates motor, reducer, ball screw and torque sensor, and usable screw sizes generally fall in the M1.2–M3 range. The YF Zhichengjia precision micro-screw handbook covers the M0.6–M2.0 machine-thread series, with minimum head diameter down to 1.30 mm (M0.8×0.2P), and drive recesses including Phillips, TORX and TORX PLUS.

Sensor modules (six-axis torque sensors, encoders) have two often-overlooked fastening requirements. The first is non-magnetic, low interference: positions near magnetic encoders must use weakly magnetic or even non-magnetic material—SUS302HQ, SUS304 and SUS316 are weakly magnetic, while titanium TA2 is non-magnetic. The second is preload consistency: the handbook's empirical value is to hold axial preload at 70–80% of the screw's breaking torque; excessive torque fluctuation directly changes sensor calibration.

Field Tip: Once a sensor-position screw strips, the whole module is scrapped. Do not directly tap small threads in aluminum/magnesium housings; prefer thread inserts (see next section) to replace the mating pair with a hard stainless thread.

Thread Reinforcement for Light-Alloy Frames: Thread Inserts Prevent Stripping

Robot torso skeletons, arm frames and leg main load-bearing structures make heavy use of aluminum and magnesium alloy castings for weight saving, yet small threads in soft material strip after only a few disassembly cycles. The handbook states that thread inserts mainly solve three problems in humanoid robots: preventing thread stripping, raising joint strength and extending service life. Although they do not form the robot's "appearance muscle," they ensure reliable connection inside high-precision, long-life, lightweight structures.

Anti-Loosening Systems under High-Frequency Vibration: Washers and Pre-Applied Adhesive

The core anti-loosening parts of humanoid-robot joint/transmission systems are mainly carbon-steel and stainless-steel lock washers, with high-end applications shifting toward high-strength alloy steel and lightweight composites to meet high-frequency vibration, high precision and long-life needs. As the handbook describes, such washers are mainly used at core hip/knee/shoulder joints, the torso main load-bearing frame, and sensor/precision modules. The screws themselves achieve anti-loosening through combined washers and pre-applied thread-locking adhesive (chemical plus physical dual principle). YF Zhichengjia high-strength anti-loosening screws cover alloy-steel 12.9 and 14.9 classes, 10.9/12.9-class titanium and 6.8-class high-strength aluminum, balancing space saving and reliability through special thread and surface treatment.

Selection Checklist and Common Misconceptions

  • Load-bearing joints: 12.9/14.9-class alloy-steel shoulder screws + serrated lock washers; do not skimp on anti-loosening parts.
  • Exposed weight-saving positions: prefer 10.9/12.9-class titanium or 6.8-class aluminum screws, galvanically compatible with Mg/Al frames.
  • Near sensors/encoders: weakly magnetic SUS304/316 or non-magnetic TA2 titanium; tighten torque precision per sensor calibration.
  • Light-alloy housings: fit thread inserts before bolting; do not directly tap sub-M3 threads in castings.
  • Fingertip/dexterous-hand tight spaces: machine-thread (M series) micro screws with pre-formed threaded holes for repeatable disassembly; self-tapping only for non-disassembled plastic parts.

The competition in robot fasteners is essentially "making reliable connections in smaller space and at lighter weight." Select joint load-bearing, sensor precision and light-alloy threads separately, then back them with lock washers and pre-applied adhesive—the micro-fastener foundation in embodied intelligence is then established.

Conclusion

From shoulder screws in harmonic/RV reducers to M1.2 micro screws in dexterous fingertips, and from thread inserts in the torso frame to joint lock washers, embodied intelligence demands that miniaturization, lightweighting and high reliability be maxed out simultaneously.
