YF Zhichengjia Launches ZT68 600MPa High-Strength Aluminum Alloy Bolt, Pioneering Cold-Heading Mass Production in 2025

Executive Summary

Mainstream aluminum bolts on the market deliver only about 420MPa tensile strength, which is insufficient for high-load three-electric and chassis applications. YF Zhichengjia has developed the ZT68 600MPa cold-formed high-strength aluminum bolt using a proprietary 7xxx modified aluminum alloy. It achieves 630MPa tensile strength, roughly a 50% improvement over conventional products, while retaining over 8% elongation toughness. It weighs about 65% less than equivalent steel bolts and has already entered cold-heading mass production in 2025.

Why Build a 600MPa-Grade Aluminum Bolt

Driven by both the dual-carbon strategy and the range-upgrade pressure on new energy vehicles, magnesium-alloy die-cast structural components have moved at scale into battery trays, electric-drive housings, and lightweight chassis structures. Magnesium is the lightest structural metal available, with a density around 1.8 g/cm³, and its die-casting process allows complex thin-wall geometries that would be difficult to achieve with aluminum. However, magnesium alloy has an extremely low electrode potential. Once directly connected to conventional steel bolts, a galvanic cell readily forms under humid or water-wading conditions, inducing severe galvanic corrosion. The magnesium substrate acts as the sacrificial anode and corrodes rapidly, often within months of outdoor exposure.

At the same time, the coefficient of thermal expansion of magnesium alloy is roughly twice that of steel. Under alternating hot and cold cycles - for example, from winter cold start to summer highway cruising - the steel bolt and the magnesium substrate deform by different amounts. This mismatch means the preload continuously decays over time, bringing the risk of seal failure, abnormal noise, and eventual loosening. Engineers who have dealt with magnesium battery tray field failures know that the joint rarely fails by breaking; it fails by slowly losing clamping force until the seal leaks or the fastener rattles.

The 6056 aluminum-alloy bolts commonly used in the industry in the past had a tensile strength of only about 420MPa. Although they mitigated the corrosion problem by bringing the bolt potential closer to the magnesium substrate, they could not meet the high-torque, high-load, long-life requirements of three-electric systems and chassis. Designers were forced to choose between corrosion compatibility and structural strength, and often ended up oversizing the bolt or adding isolation coatings to compensate. The ZT68 600MPa cold-formed high-strength aluminum bolt officially released by YF Zhichengjia is precisely a new-generation product developed in-house to close this gap: it is based on a proprietary 7xxx modified aluminum alloy, formed in one piece by cold heading, and aims to deliver both lightweighting and high strength simultaneously, removing the historical trade-off between corrosion compatibility and mechanical performance.

Hard Performance Parameters of ZT68

Using an M8 x 40 hex-flange bolt as the benchmark, ZT68 comprehensively outperforms mainstream aluminum bolts in strength, toughness, and stability. According to measured data released by the company, the product reaches a tensile strength of up to 630MPa, about 50% higher than the traditional 420MPa-class products, while retaining over 8% elongation toughness to achieve the balance of "strong but not brittle." This combination matters because high-strength aluminum alloys traditionally trade ductility for strength; the ZT68 process is engineered to avoid that trade-off.

In one sentence: ZT68 lifts the "strength ceiling" of aluminum-alloy bolts from 420MPa to the 600MPa class, and through potential matching, synchronized deformation, and a controllable friction coefficient, it solves the long-standing problems of magnesium-alloy joining from both the electrochemical and mechanical sides.

Three Process Breakthroughs: Material, Heat Treatment, Surface

Material and heat treatment: A precision "solution treatment + quenching + aging" route is applied. Solution treatment fully dissolves solute atoms such as Zn, Mg, and Cu into the aluminum matrix; quenching locks them in place at room temperature to form a supersaturated solid solution; during aging, fine and dispersed MgZn2 strengthening phases uniformly precipitate and pin dislocations, thereby greatly increasing strength. The controlled precipitation is critical - if the particles are too coarse, strengthening is weak; if too fine, toughness suffers. The company's proprietary aging curve balances both. Even after long-term service at 150°C, strength remains stable above 600MPa without creep or relaxation, which is essential for electric-drive housings that run hot for thousands of hours.

Thread and surface: A post-heat-treatment thread rolling process creates uniform residual compressive stress at the thread root, offsetting service tensile stress and improving fatigue strength. This is a well-known principle in fastener engineering: threads rolled after heat treatment retain beneficial compressive residual stress, while cut threads do not. The surface is anodized to form a dense oxide film that blocks corrosive media; the microscopic grain boundaries are clear and free of continuous brittle phases, structurally interrupting corrosion penetration paths. The one-piece cold-heading forming retains the complete metal flow line, avoiding the damage to the material fiber structure caused by machining. Together with a proprietary three-stage lubrication system, the total friction coefficient is stabilized in the 0.09~0.15 range, which is narrow enough for automated assembly lines to predict clamping force consistently.

Typical Application Scenarios

  • Electric drive systems: Fastening magnesium-alloy motor housings, reducer flanges, and electronic-control enclosures. These components see sustained temperatures up to 150°C and high torque; CTE matching suppresses preload loss where steel bolts would relax rapidly.
  • Traction battery systems: Joining magnesium-alloy battery trays, box frames, and cooling plates. Potential matching and anodization ensure long-term sealing and corrosion protection, which is critical because battery packs must maintain integrity for 8 to 15 years under warranty.
  • Lightweight chassis: Alternating-load positions such as magnesium-aluminum control arms, steering knuckles, and subframes. Residual compressive stress from post-HT thread rolling extends fatigue life, which is essential for parts that endure billions of load cycles over a vehicle's lifetime.
  • Large magnesium die castings: Instrument panel skeletons and interior lightweight structures. Cold-heading consistency and low-scatter friction coefficient support high-takt automated lines where every bolt is fed by a robot and tightened to a target torque with no manual intervention.

Mass Production and Delivery Capability

Founded in Shenzhen in 2005, YF Zhichengjia has focused on fastener manufacturing for over twenty years and masters the full-process chain of cold heading, heat treatment, and surface treatment. The company obtained IATF 16949 certification in 2013 and entered the new energy vehicle supply chain in 2017. The company has already pioneered cold-heading mass production of 600MPa-class high-strength aluminum bolts in 2025, and is equipped with a full set of precision inspection equipment, reliably supplying customized fastening solutions for magnesium/aluminum-alloy lightweight structures. The transition from prototype to mass production is non-trivial for a 600MPa aluminum bolt: controlling the aging response of a 7xxx alloy at production scale, maintaining die life when heading high-strength wire, and ensuring friction coefficient consistency across batches all require process know-how that has been built over years.

Conclusion

The launch of the ZT68 600MPa cold-formed high-strength aluminum bolt means that YF Zhichengjia has connected "material - process - inspection - mass production" into one complete chain on the frontier direction of dissimilar-material joining. For OEMs and three-electric customers pushing magnesium-alloy lightweighting, this is a fastening solution that is light, strong, and can stably run on automated production lines. The company will continue to deepen dissimilar-material joining technology and provide reliable fastening solutions for automotive lightweighting and low-carbon development.
